Everybody has the dream: Build a boat in the backyard and sail off to join the happy campers off Pogo Pogo, right? Assuming you aren't independently wealthy, if you want a boat that's really you, you gotta build it yourself. Backyard boatbuilding has its problems.
Building in fiberglass is itchy, smelly, and yields a product that yachting maven L. Francis Herreshoff once called 'frozen snot.' Ferrocement, once all the rage, has pretty much sunk from favor, if you catch the drift. But there's still wood, right?
Nature's perfect material. You can build in the time-honored traditions of the Golden Age of Yachting, loving crafting intricate joints in rare tropical hardwoods, steaming swamp oak butts to sinuous shapes, holding the whole thing together with nonferrous fastenings that cost a buck or better each. Does that sound like boatbuilding for everyperson? What about the currently fashionable wood/epoxy boatbuilding? You butter regular old wood with Miracle Whip, stick it together in the shape of a boat, and off you go, right? Epoxy works, but They don't exactly give it away; nor is it exactly a benign substance. Suiting up like Homer Simpson heading for a fun-filled day at the nuclear power plant isn't exactly the aesthetic boatbuilding experience many of us are looking for.
Where does that leave us? In the capable hands of George Buehler, who honors the timeless traditions of the sea all right, but those from the other side of the boatyard tracks. Buehler draws his inspiration from centuries of workboat construction, where semiskilled fishermen built rugged, economical boats from everyday materials in their own backyards, and went to sea in them in all kinds of weather, not just when it was pleasant. Buehler's boats sail on every ocean and perform every task, from long-term liveaboards in Norwegian fjords to a traveling doctor's office in Alaska. This book contains complete plans for seven cruising boats-from a 28-foot sailboat to a 55-foot power cruiser.
All the information you need is here, including step-by-step instructions honed by nearly 20 years of supplying boat plans to backyard builders-and helping them out when they get into trouble. Buehler is anarchic, heretical, and occasionally profane; his book is West Coast counterculture meets traditional hardchine workboat construction, leavened with hardnosed common sense and penny-pinching economy. This book is for those who look around them and see that much of what is done in the world today-whether in yachting or politics or economics or interpersonal relationships-is based not on logic but on conforming and meeting other people's expectations. This book is most definitely NOT about either.
It is about the realization of dreams. If you believe that everyone who wants a cruising boat can have one. If you see beauty beneath the fish scales and work scars of a commercial fishing boat.
If you want to build a simple, rugged, economical, good-looking cruising boat-power or sail-using everyday lumberyard materials and few skills other than perseverance, this is the book for you. Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding tells you how to build extraordinary boats using the most ordinary skills and materials, with complete plans, instructions, and specifications for seven real cruising boats ranging from a 28-foot sailboat to a 55-foot power cruiser. 'Build wooden boats the Buehler way, which is to say inexpensively, yet like the proverbial brick outhouse.'
-WoodenBoat Richly flavored with personal advice and anecdotes as well as a wealth of valuable information.' -American Sailing Association 'Everyone will revere this book.' -The Ensign. 'May you live in interesting times' has taken on a new alarming meaning. We've all heard commentators saying 'you can't make this stuff up.'
These 'times' have all the elements of Absurdism and, thus, the main title of this book, 'Waiting for Someone to Explain It.' It is a term expressed by playwright Eugene Ionesco, who said 'As the world is incomprehensible to me, I'm waiting for someone to explain it.' The book's subtitle, 'The Rise of Contempt and Decline of Sense' narrows the 'world' down to American politics, cultural values and fiscal affairs at the onset of the 21st century.
Its author, Robert Hagelstein, maintained a blog during this period, contemporaneously commenting on, and documenting, the datum of this rise and fall. In 'Waiting for Someone to Explain It; The Rise of Contempt and Decline of Sense,' he chronologically presents them and weaves a narrative which reads as a whodunit but without a singular smoking gun. There are many, and one intersects with another, resulting in the normalization of contemptible behavior and the inexplicable abandonment of fiscal and legislative common sense. Be prepared to meet the major players in this drama; Environmental Issues, Trumpism, Obama Hope, Gun Control (or the lack of) and Mass Shootings, Income Inequality, Racial Issues, Tax Reform, the Financial Crisis and Deficit Spending, Societal Polarization, Government Impairment, Stock Market Decline and Recovery, Inflation Vs. Deflation, Foreign Relations, Election Primaries and Rigging, Job Creation, Gaslighting and Fake News, Celebrity Culture and Anti-Intellectualism (to name a few). These players come and go in the drama, rising and falling on the sea of news cycles that assault societal consciousness.
Even though the book does not purport to have the 'answers' reading 'Waiting for Someone to Explain It' is a compelling argument that 'we have met the enemy and he is us. 'Thoughtful and wise, Robert Hagelstein's 'Waiting for Someone to Explain It, ' offers an illuminating, much-needed depiction of how we have arrived at our current politically contemptuous state - and how the party of austerity has given the U.S. Its largest and steadily growing deficit. Must reading for anyone interested in the political and economic challenges currently facing our country.' .Ron Chambers, Former Director, Naval Institute Press 'Bob Hagelstein has the gift of being able to seamlessly weave whimsical commentary about our daily lives with insightful observations about our turbulent times.
Reading 'Waiting for Someone to Explain It' is like sitting down to dinner with dear friends - the conversation just goes where it goes, sometimes serious or poignant, other times ironic or funny. Bob has graced us with musings on the blog from which this book draws for more than a decade now.
In a way, I don't want 'someone to explain it, ' because reading Bob's efforts to figure it all out while he's waiting is far more enriching and entertaining.David Einhorn, Editor, writer, and professional musician. 'On one level 'Waiting for Someone to Explain It' chronicles with Pepysian precision the political and cultural progress of our time. Hagelstein's sharp sense of the absurd allows both penetrating commentary and humor.
Our own days are enhanced as we meet the author commenting on events readers knew or witnessed.Bruce Rettman, former Co-director of the Boston Writing Project and NEH Hemingway scholar English Department Chair. Succinct and jargon free, Stage Rigging Handbook remains the only book in any language that covers the design, operation, and maintenance of stage rigging equipment. This second edition includes two new parts: the first, and expanded discussion of the forces and loads on stage rigging components and the structure supporting them; the second, an examination of block and tackle rigging. The remaining four parts contain numerous revisions. Explaining his purpose, Jay O. Glerum points out that four main principles make up the core of this book: know the rigging system; know that it is in safe working order; know how to use it; keep your concentration. Glerum applies these principles to all of the major types of stage rigging systems, including block and tackle, hemp, counterweight, and motorized. He describes each type of rigging, then thoroughly reviews the operating procedures and ways of inspecting existing systems. He's not the perfect husband.
But he is the perfect suspect. Dan Cooper has never been the perfect husband to Lisa. He travels for work and plays the carefree bachelor when he can. But now, on a solo business trip, in a remote coastal hotel, he’s surprised to find Lisa in his bathroom. He has no idea how she got there but one chilling fact is clear: everything points to Dan having murdered her.
Someone is trying to frame him. Someone who might still be watching. In a panic, he goes on the run. But even as he flees across Europe, his unknown enemy stacks up the evidence against him. Dan is determined to clear his name and take revenge on Lisa’s killer, but the culprit is closing in. And then there’s the agony of his own guilty conscience.
No, he didn’t kill her—but is it all his fault? An engrossing analysis of the pseudo-democratic methods employed by despots around the world to retain control Contrary to what is commonly believed, authoritarian leaders who agree to hold elections are generally able to remain in power longer than autocrats who refuse to allow the populace to vote. In this engaging and provocative book, Nic Cheeseman and Brian Klaas expose the limitations of national elections as a means of promoting democratization, and reveal the six essential strategies that dictators use to undermine the electoral process in order to guarantee victory for themselves.
Based on their firsthand experiences as election watchers and their hundreds of interviews with presidents, prime ministers, diplomats, election officials, and conspirators, Cheeseman and Klaas document instances of election rigging from Argentina to Zimbabwe, including notable examples from Brazil, India, Nigeria, Russia, and the United States—touching on the 2016 election. This eye-opening study offers a sobering overview of corrupted professional politics, while providing fertile intellectual ground for the development of new solutions for protecting democracy from authoritarian subversion.
